On May 6, 2025, the CT-Luso Project held the training Workshop of Module 5, focused on the theme “Research with biological samples of animal and plant origin in biomedicine.” The session was held online and moderated by Professors Maria do Céu Patrão Neves and Lúcia Domingues.

The workshop began with a brief introduction by the project coordinator, Maria do Céu Patrão Neves, who introduced the invited speakers. Each expert then presented their insights, sharing experiences and challenges faced in their respective countries regarding the development of research with biological samples.

Bucar Indjai, from Guinea-Bissau, spoke on “Medicinal plants and research,” highlighting the potential of these natural resources for health and environmental conservation. Representing Mozambique, Nídia Cangi Vaz addressed the role of the Animal Biodiversity Biobank in promoting health research and preserving native fauna species. From São Tomé and Príncipe, Miclay Carvalho focused on “Research on bioinsecticides and human health,” emphasizing the benefits of natural solutions in addressing tropical diseases.

The session also included reflections on the creation and management of biobanks, key constraints to their implementation, and the importance of collaborative networks among Lusophone African Countries (PALOP) for advancing this strategic field.
